Duty rota, July 2026

A hospital month that writes itself — fairly, and with no gaps.

Every month, someone in an emergency department loses days of their life to a spreadsheet: who covers nights, who is owed a weekend, who cannot work Tuesdays. The rules are real, the stakes are people's sleep, and the pencil always slips.

Medrota learned the department's own rulebook — the night groups, the senior cover, the fairness debts — and now writes the month in seconds. Doctors ask for what they need in plain terms; the month comes back balanced, and the department's familiar colour-coded sheet comes back looking exactly as it always has.

The department did not have to change how it works. The paperwork changed around them.

What it does

  • 01A month of duty cover, produced in seconds instead of days
  • 02Zero rule violations across every generated month
  • 03The department's own colour-coded sheet, reproduced cell for cell
For the curious — the making of it

Remix 2 + Express, Drizzle ORM on Postgres, exceljs for cell-faithful workbook round-trip, AWS SES

  • Rota engine encodes the department's real construction checklist (SR call, night groups A–D, D1/D2, open sessions)
  • Pixel-faithful Excel import/export including the legacy colour legend
  • Passwordless magic-link entry; built in a two-day sprint, 21 commits
